Brentwood began hand crafting luxury mattresses in 1987. Originally known as a boutique manufacturer, their popularity exploded as soon as they moved to the online distribution model. The Cover & Fire Retardant Layer

Brentwood starts with soft, breathable performance stretch knit fabric. The cover is embroidered with a calming wave pattern.  Inspired by the surf and lively tide pools found at California’s Crystal Cove State Park, the embroidery adds structure and artful detail to the mattress.

The US mandates all mattresses have a fire resistant barrier. Most companies choose a chemical solvent, but not Brentwood. The Cypress mattress has a thin layer of silica quartz — completely free from chemical flame retardants.

Cypress Latex Comfort Layers

Regardless if you choose the all foam or hybrid configuration, the comfort layer will be the same high quality, pressure relieving foams.

Brentwood begins with either 1″ (Classic) or 2″ (Luxe) of Charcoal Infused Memory Foam.  Activated charcoal is one of the most effective cooling and purifying minerals. Its many healing properties include trapping toxins and chemicals in the body, allowing them to be flushed out and preventing reabsorption. Brentwood’s foam has been specifically designed to energize in response to body heat, which is the key to providing highly adaptive comfort and excellent pressure relief.

This is followed by either 1″ (Classic) or 2″ (Luxe) of CertiPUR-US® certified polyurethane base foam with up to 20% plant-based BioFoam^®, made in USA. Biofoam^® memory foam provides pressure relief and cooling. As part of its sustainability effort, Brentwood, only uses memory foams formulated with up to 20% BioFoam®. BioFoam® is a patented biological foam made in the United States from vegetable materials. Using BioFoam® does not mean that the memory foam can be considered a completely natural product. But it’s a step in the right direction.

Support Layer – All Foam Support Core or 7 Zoned Coil Support

All Foam Option:  Brentwood chose an 8 inches of BioFoam® support layer.  This dense support layer is contour cut to provide additional support in the hip adn shoulder region allowing for greater spinal alignment.

Hybrid Option: For unparalleled support, Brentwood chose an 8-inch ActivEdge™ Quantum® Edge coil unit from Leggett & Platt®. The Cypress features up to 975 individually pocketed coils, plus a reinforced perimeter. It is one of the most advanced support systems to pair with their comfort system. The springs have zoned support, placing softer (yet incredibly supportive) springs in the shoulder and hip region and more support where it counts – in the middle third of our body. Finally, they reinforced the edge coils so that you can sleep all the way to the edge of the mattress without any feeling of falling out. The result: a support system that properly aligns the spine while relieving pressure points for a comfortable night’s rest.

Tufting

To ensure that everything fits together snug and tight, Brentwood chose top tufting.  Top tufting is the process of sewing the embroidered cover to the top comfort layers, creating a flat sleeping surface.  The result, no clumping or shifting of materials creating a solid feeling mattress for a deep sleep all night long.

Does it Sleep Cool?

Yes! Cypress has several features to give you a cool, dry and comfortable night sleep (even for furnace sleepers). Feeling cool at night is all about feeling dry. Cypress starts with the ultra wicking embroidered cover.  The charcoal infused memory foam and BioFoam are specially formulated to draw heat from the body (and not return it!).  Additionally, Charcoal is a naturally toxin absorbing so you have a fresh feeling mattress for years to come.  And finally, the hybrid options has springs which further promote air flow. The result, a cool dry sleep all night long regardless of which side you choose.

How About Edge Support?

All Foam: Good

The Cypress offers good edge support compared to other all foam mattresses. Reinforced edges and the extra durable border fabric keep all the parts, reducing any sagging.  Even though the Cypress has several inches of memory foam comfort layer (especially the Luxe model), you will be able to sleep comfortably all the way to the edge of the mattress without worry of “slipping off”!

Hybrid: Good
Cypress reinforces the outer edge of the spring support system with thicker coils on every mattress. This results in a stronger edge support versus the all foam model, allowing you to sleep all the way to the edge with a little more support and certainly no worry of sliding off.

The Cypress models range from medium-firm to medium-soft, but the biggest question to answer is which style do you prefer – all foam or hybrid.  We’ll layout the different comfort styles and feel by firmest to softest to help you decide best.

Cypress Classic 11″ All Foam (6.5 on a scale of 10)

The Cypress Classic All Foam 11″ is a multi-sleeper, designed for side, stomach and back sleepers alike. However, side sleepers will realize the most immediate benefit as the pressure points of the shoulder, lower back and hips feel immediate relief due to the lighter, airy design of the memory foam. The comfort foam layers are also highly responsive, meaning they fill in the crevices quickly when weight is taken off (instead of some denser foams that keep the energy and make it difficult to move around).

Stomach and back sleepers will also feel very nice pressure relief, but side sleepers feel the most. However, you quickly feel the 8 inch core support layer helping to align the spine, putting you body in a relaxed state. The key to any good night sleep is spinal alignment, usually when our mattress does not allow for proper spinal alignment we toss and turn at night, sometimes waking with back, hip or shoulder pain. Up to 200 pounds, the Cypress Classic 11″ should provide enough support to keep the body aligned. Over 200 may require additional support, and we recommend the Cypress hybrid model.

In comparison to the hybrid, you will need to prefer the sinking feeling until your body contours to the dense support foam.  In the hybrid, they springs will support you, keeping you more “on top” of the mattress.

Cypress Classic 11″ Hybrid (5.5 on a scale of 10)

The Cypress Classic 11″ Hybrid is a true, hybrid design, multi-sleeper designed to support all sleeping styles – side, stomach, back and any combination therein.

Immediately upon laying on the Classic Hybrid, you can feel the charcoal infused memory foam take you in but you quickly feel the substantial support cradling your body of the transition foam. Almost immediately you will feel the support of the coil system begin to push back and cradle your body no matter which position you sleep.  You will feel just enough pressure relief on the top of the mattress but you are also going to have the support system that is going to keep you “on” the mattress rather than “in” the mattress as we will see in the Luxe models. No matter your sleeping style, you cannot go wrong with this mattress, especially at this value price.

The sweet spot for weight is up to 225lbs.  Above that weight, you will want to look towards the hybrid luxe design for additional support and comfort.

Cypress Luxe 13″ All Foam (5 on a scale of 10)

The Cypress Luxe 13″ All Foam comes with several key comfort and support upgrades over the Classic.  This starts with an extra inch of charcoal infused foam for more contouring.  This is followed by an extra inch of BioFoam transition foam for more support and response.

While the Luxe 13″ all foam can be used as a multi-sleeper, side sleepers that like the all memory foam feel will appreciate the Luxe most.  Side sleepers will realize the most immediate benefit as the pressure points of the shoulder, lower back and hips feel immediate relief with the extra cushioning.  The comfort foam layers remain highly responsive, meaning they fill in the crevices quickly when weight is taken off (instead of some foams that keep the energy and make it difficult to move around).

However, you quickly rest upon the 8 inch core support layer helping to align the spine, putting you body in a relaxed state. Up to 220 pounds, the Luxe All Foam should provide enough support to keep the body aligned. • This is predominantly designed for side sleepers, but combination back/stomach sleepers will also enjoy it.
• The pressure relieving comfort layer provides a good amount of sink but the responsive design of the foam and the ability for air to circulate throughout the mattress will keep you temperature regulated all night long.
• Edge support is good for the average weight sleeper. The Luxe All Foam comes with an 8 inch support layer and a reinforced encasement to prevent that falling-off-the-bed feeling from most all foam mattresses.

Cypress Luxe 13″ Hybrid (4.5 on a scale of 10)

The Cypress Luxe 13″ Hybrid the softest and plushest model and a top choice for lighter-to-average sized sleepers looking for a plush feel. The softer top layers give you a good amount of contouring – like sinking into a cloud. The extra inch of charcoal infused foam immediately relieves the pressure points on your hips and shoulders.

From the moment you lay down on the Luxe 13″ Hybrid, it is obvious  that you’ve arrived on the soft, plush version. The airy foam top will envelop and contour to your body more than its firmer cousin in the 11″. That said, after a few minutes, as you settle into the mattress, you can begin to ever so slightly feel the pushback from the pocketed coils as they begin to properly align your spine.  You will definitely feel more “in-the-mattress” (as opposed to on top of it), but you won’t be sacrificing the support.

With the Luxe Hybrid 13″,, exclusive side sleepers get the best of both worlds: maximum pressure and proper spinal alignment due to the sinking of the hip and shoulder regions. Because the bed envelops you more, some think the bed will sleep warm or even hot. This is not the case with the Cypress Hybrid Luxe. The charcoal infused foam combined with the air flow design and the breathable cover keep this plush bed temperature neutral all evening long.

All Foam:  Excellent

As an all foam mattress, Cypress offers excellent motion isolation – it’s everything you would expect from a luxury all foam mattress.  Simply put, you will not feel your partner move at night.  Whether they are a toss and turner, an early riser or using the facilities, it’s not the bed that will wake you.

Hybrid: Very Good

Generally in a mattress, springs create the motion transfer.  This true for the Cypress as the hybrid version has slightly more motion transfer than the all foam version.  However, Brentwood individually wraps each coil to help dampen any transfer.  And, the open cell structure of charcoal infused memory foam and Biofoam by its very nature does not transfer motion.  It isolates and absorbs energy so you may rest peacefully all night long.  If you require absolute isolation, look towards the Cypress all foam, however, the hybrid performs very well in isolating motion so you may sleep soundly all night long.

Due to the high quality materials, the Cypress mattress has minimal to no off gassing.

The Cypress comes in a box for easy shipping and moving to the bedroom. It’s crazy to think that a king size mattress with powerful springs can be compressed, but it can. And, with no sacrifice to quality and durability. Some people ask if compressing the springs will hurt their integrity. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Springs are actually shipped compressed all over the world (to save space). The springs integrity is damaged if they are pulled excessively or bent out of position.
