Company Overview

We love the All American story of Brooklyn Bedding. A true entrepreneur with grit, vision and a lot of help along the way, John Merwin formed what is now Brooklyn Bedding in 1995. Not in Brooklyn, NY as one might think, but in Phoenix, Arizona (he named the company after his daughter, Brooklyn). Originally a mattress liquidation business, it soon turned to building a mattress and listing it on Amazon, just to see what might happen. Well, it took off and John launched Brooklynbedding.com. A pioneer in many respects, John was one of the original visionaries of a bed-in-a-box mattress packaging and delivery system. John wanted to ensure his beds were known for high quality at a price everyone could afford. Therefore, he took the entire manufacturing process in-house. To this day, all Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are made start-to-finish in their Phoenix factory; many on the assembly team have been making mattresses by hand for decades. They have earned a reputation not only for making one of the leading mattresses in the industry, but for quick delivery, superior customer support and one of the best trial and warranties in the industry.

As a testament to Brooklyn’s commitment to quality, Brooklyn Bedding now manufactures many of the top private label mattress brands on the market. Brooklyn lists 6 models on their website, but they also manufacture brands such as Plank (extra firm) Plank Luxe and Titan (for the larger sleeper). Now 25 years old, Brooklyn is showing no signs of slowing down – in the last two years, Brooklyn Bedding has doubled its production capacity. They have recently completed the buildout of a new 600,000-square-foot factory in Phoenix where even more mattresses can be handcrafted, on demand, and shipped direct to customers’ doors.

Let’s have a closer look at the Aurora Luxe’s materials before hopping in the 3 different comfort styles to choose from.

Aurora Luxe Construction & Materials

The Cover

The cooling experience begins as soon as you touch the cover. It is a smooth top weave that feels silky to the touch. It is specially engineered to enable you to feel the hyper-cooling technology at work in the foam as soon as you come into contact. The weave is ultra breathable and highly wicking so you stay cool and dry all night long.

Comfort Layer

Alright, there’s a lot of cooling tech in the foam, so we’re going to lay it out as detailed as possible.

Cooling Gel Coating

Brooklyn’s spreads a thin layer of “phase change material” (PCM) on the top of the first layer of TitanFlex foam. This PCM has micro gel beads embedded within it that react to your skin’s temperature. Generally, our skin is 91 degrees, however our ideal sleeping skin temperature is 88 degrees. The gel beads are designed to maintain an 88 degree surface temperature. When the temperature exceeds 88 degrees, the gel activates pulling heat away. When the temp is below 88 degrees, it solidifies and lessens the heat draw. This changing material is what makes the Aurora Luxe cool to the touch and so popular with hot sleepers.

Copper Infused

In addition to the PCM, Brooklyn infused Copper into the top comfort layer of TitanFlex. Why? Two reasons. First, copper is highly conductive so it works harder to draw heat away from the body. Second, it is highly antimicrobial, 1,000 times more antimicrobial than stainless steel. This bacteria killer will keep your bed feeling fresh and smelling clean longer.

Titan Flex

The Gel Coating and the Copper is infused into Brooklyn’s proprietary TitanFlex foam. So, what exactly is TitanFlex and what makes it so special? TitanFlex is a latex alternative which provides the pressure relief of a gel foam with the responsiveness of latex. This means it provides the best of both worlds by evenly distributing pressure across the mattress with just the right amount of contouring and responsiveness. The result is exceptional pressure point relief that can help reduce joint and muscle pain. The cooling gel infused within the TitanFlex pulls heat away from the body, keeping you cool all night long. TitanFlex’s open cell structure and overall design enables it to have higher water absorption and greater moisture wicking. This engineering allows moisture to be released from the mattress more quickly, also contributing to a cooler, more comfortable sleep. Depending upon the comfort level, you’ll have 3-3.5 inches of ultra comfortable Titanflex on the Aurora Luxe.

Below the Titanflex is either a 1″ layer of Gel Swirl memory foam on the soft and medium or a 1.5″ layer VariFlex transition foam in the firm. These transition layers provide deep compression support and comfort. It is more of a support layer than a “comfort/contouring” layer and acts as a transition between the foam layers on top and the coils beneath. Here’s the Aurora Luxe’s 4.5″ comfort layer construction

  • Soft:1.5″ TitanFlex with Copper, another, 2″ soft TitanFlex, 1″ Gel Swirl
  • Medium:1.5″ TitanFlex with Copper, 2″ medium TitanFlex, 1″ Gel Swirl
  • Firm:1.5″ TitanFlex with Copper, 1.5″ firm TitanFlex, 1.5″ VariFlex transition foam
Coil System

The Aurora Luxe’s support system employs up to 1,032 individually encased 8” Ascension coils directly underneath the comfort layer. Brooklyn individually wraps each coil to mitigate any motion transfer in the mattress. This combination allows for exceptional reactivity and motion isolation, minimizing sleep disturbance. Brooklyn divided the spring support system into 5 zones to enable greater support where it counts (especially the lumbar region). Additionally, Brooklyn reinforced the edge with higher caliber perimeter coils to create greater edge support along the sides, head and foot of the bed. The result? A solid support system that will last for years to come.

Bottom Support Layer

Underneath the Ascension coils, Brooklyn lays .75″ of highly responsive foam to add further compression support to the mattress and absorb any additional motion.

Tufting

Tufting is the process where the individual parts of the mattress are either sewn or glued together to prevent slippage. In the Aurora Luxe’s case, it is a flat bed and the weave is stretched over the foam layers. To keep the bed as flat as possible, the Aurora Luxe is not tufted.

Does Aurora Luxe Sleep Cool?

YES, YES, YES! We found Aurora Luxeto offer cold to colder temperature control. Being cool at night is all about being dry. Aurora Luxe accomplishes this through the PCM, multiple gel layers and finally the breathability offered by the spring base:

  1. The cover wicks away moisture and enables you to directly feel the cooling properties.
  2. The gel infused and responsive TitanFlex comfort layer pulls heat from the body (and doesn’t return it!)
  3. As the mattress is a hybrid, air is able to flow and circulate in-between the coil system

Final result – Aurora Luxe will keep you cool and dry throughout the night allowing your body to get the rest it deserves.

How about Edge Support?

Much Improved with the latest release!
Brooklyn recently redesigned the Aurora Luxe to significantly improve its edge support. They added ribbing around the edge to strengthen the corners and edges. This improved the rating from ok to good on the firm and medium and from non existent to okay on the soft. At the end of the day, the Aurora Luxe comes with 4.5″ of contouring gel foam. That is going to have some give once you get out to the edge of the bed. The coils help, but if you need significant edge support, there may be a little too much sag on the soft and medium.

Endurance Testing – Will Aurora Luxe Stand the Test of Time?

Aurora Luxe is a very high quality mattress and Brooklyn spends a tremendous amount of time stress testing the materials to get the most out of the springs and foam. The latex alternative TitanFlex is more durable than regular gel-foams. The result? A long lasting bed that can support well over 1.000lbs.

Aurora Luxe Mattress Three Distinct Comfort Styles (Soft, Medium and Firm)

No matter which style you choose, just by the traditional look of the Brooklyn Aurora Luxe, you know you’ll be sleeping on a comfortable yet very supportive mattress for many years to come. As we’ve said before, in this budget range it is difficult to find a cooler, more supportive or comfortable mattress. Let’s take a closer look at the different styles.

Aurora Luxe Soft

Exclusive side sleepers that like a lot of sink in their mattress will love the Aurora Luxe Soft. Generally, the more the sink, the warmer the experience. However, with Aurora Luxe’s PCM cooling layer, you will have a cool comfortable sleep all night long. Even with soft gels, the TitanFlex latex alternative is quick responding, meaning it will go back to its original shape quickly as you move about. But this bed is a hybrid and right away you feel the support of the coils keeping you upright with proper spinal alignment. You will definitely feel “in” the mattress as opposed to “on” it, but without sacrificing the support.

With the soft, exclusive side sleepers get the best of both worlds as they will feel the most pressure relief and spinal alignment due to the sinking of the hip and shoulder regions. Back and stomach sleepers may feel too much sink in the areas that need the most support (the lower back). Because the bed envelops you more, some think that might make the bed sleep warmer or even hotter. This is not the case with the Aurora Luxe. The PCM cooling gel combined with the air flow design and the cover keep this soft bed cool all evening long.

The sweet spot for weight is up to 200 (especially for side sleepers). Above that weight, you’ll start to lose the benefit of the pressure relief from the gel as your body rests more on the springs. At that size, you might consider the Medium model as the comfort layer provides additional support and comfort relief.

  • On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Soft a 4 out of 10.
  • Primarily designed for side sleepers. Side/stomach or side/back sleepers might feel more support on the Medium.
  • The Aurora Luxe is all about cool. Absolutely no overheating here which will keep you cool and dry all night long.
  • Edge support is good (much improved recently) – the 4.5 in of soft yet responsive foam minimal results in some sag on the sides.
Aurora Luxe Medium

The Aurora Luxe Medium is a true multi-sleeper designed to support all sleeping styles, side, stomach, back and any combination therein. As soon as you lay on the medium, you feel the silky texture of the cover and the cooling PCM make your skin temperature drop. TitanFlex is a latex alternative so the bed has a bit of bounce. While you sink into the 4.5″ of pressure relieving foams, they respond and bounce back to their original form. Almost immediately you will feel the support of the coil system begin to push back and cradle your body no matter which position you sleep. The pressure relief is significantly greater than the Brooklyn Signature model but you do not sacrifice the support that you need to keep spinal alignment. The TitanFlex keeps you a little more “in” the mattress than “on”. No matter your sleeping style, this bed will keep you cool and dry for an incredible price.

  • On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Medium a 6 out of 10.
  • This is a multi-sleeper, designed for all sleeping styles.
  • Cool Cool Cool, and dry all night long.
  • Edge support is okay – the 4.5″ of medium TitanFlex gel will have a little sag on the edge.

Aurora Luxe Firm

It’s hard to believe that 4.5″ of foam can produce a firm bed, but Brooklyn made it happen with the Aurora Luxe. The Aurora Luxe still has the bounce of the TitanFlex latex alternative, but Brooklyn reinforced the foams with a denser foam core of its VariFlex foam before the spring layer. Side sleepers may get away with it but you lose the softer luxury feel that’s in the soft and medium models. You will definitely not sink as much as you sleep “on top” of this mattress. The bed still packs in all of the same cooling features as its cousins so you will sleep cool and dry throughout the night. If you do end up on your side, you won’t have as much pressure relief. You will, however, have the same cooling factors and of course support.

  • On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Firmer a 7.5 out of 10.
  • Stomach and back sleepers will get the most benefit out of the Firm version. Any side sleepers will also benefit but should look more toward the Medium.
  • The firm comfort layer provides very little sink, but even so, the superior cooling technology design will keep you cool and dry all night long.
  • Edge support is good – the firm TitanFlex Gel, transition layer and springs will enable you to get the full benefit of the mattress all the way out to the edge.

Motion Isolation

All Aurora Luxe comfort levels have very good motionBrookly Bedding has excellent motion isolation isolation. Simply put, you will rarely feel your partner move at night. Whether they are a toss and turner, an early riser or using the facilities, it’s not the bed that will wake you. However, there are slight differences among the styles due to their construction. Soft and medium will have the least amount of motion transfer because the high density gel foam by its very nature does not transfer motion. It absorbs energy. Any motion might come from the springs below, but the pocket coil system separates the springs further isolating any motion transfer. The Firm has a higher density TitanFlex which is more responsive. However, to counter the additional motion possibility, Aurora Luxe uses VeriFlex gel foam to provide the extra absorption, mitigating motion transfer as much as possible. If you need total motion isolation, then look more towards the all foam mattresses. However, the design and attention to detail get the hybrids very close to no motion.

How Does the Aurora Luxe Mattress Arrive?

All Brooklyn beds come in a box. It’s crazy to think that aBrooklyn Bedding comes in a box delivered straight to your door king size Aurora Luxe with powerful springs, dense foams can be compressed, but it can. And, with no sacrifice to quality and durability. Some people ask if compressing the springs will hurt their integrity. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Springs are actually shipped compressed all over the world (to save space). The springs integrity is damaged if they are pulled excessively or bent out of position. But, the way Brooklyn compresses its mattresses, they keep their shape and strength. The box arrives via Fedex or UPS from their Phoenix, AZ factory. Simply unbox the mattress. Rest it on the bed frame and remove the plastic wrapping and the bed will decompress before your eyes. You can begin sleeping on the bed and enjoying a restful night sleep that same day.

What’s Brooklyn's Return Policy? Can I exchange my Aurora Luxe for either a softer or firmer model?
