Company Overview

We love the All American story of Brooklyn Bedding. A true entrepreneur with grit, vision and a lot of help along the way, John Merwin formed what is now Brooklyn Bedding in 1995. Not in Brooklyn, NY as one might think, but in Phoenix, Arizona (he named the company after his daughter, Brooklyn). Originally a mattress liquidation business, it soon turned to building a mattress and listing it on Amazon, just to see what might happen. Well, it took off and John launched Brooklynbedding.com. A pioneer in many respects, John was one of the original visionaries of a bed-in-a-box mattress packaging and delivery system. John wanted to ensure his beds were known for high quality at a price everyone could afford. Therefore, he took the entire manufacturing process in-house. To this day, all Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are made start-to-finish in their Phoenix factory; many on the assembly team have been making mattresses by hand for decades. They have earned a reputation not only for making one of the leading mattresses in the industry, but for quick delivery, superior customer support and one of the best trial and warranties in the industry.

As a testament to Brooklyn’s commitment to quality, Brooklyn Bedding now manufactures many of the top private label mattress brands on the market. Brooklyn lists 6 models on their website, but they also manufacture brands such as Plank (extra firm) Plank Luxe and Titan (for the larger sleeper). Now 25 years old, Brooklyn is showing no signs of slowing down – in the last two years, Brooklyn Bedding has doubled its production capacity. They have recently completed the buildout of a new 600,000-square-foot factory in Phoenix where even more mattresses can be handcrafted, on demand, and shipped direct to customers’ doors.

Let’s have a closer look at the Signature’s materials before hopping in the 3 different comfort styles to choose from.

Signature Construction & Materials

The Cover

Brooklyn chose a premium quilted cover for its mattresses. This material resists impressions and remains breathable throughout the night so you sleep cool and dry.

Soft: 1″ quilted cover
Medium: 1″ quilted cover
Firm: 0.5″ in Quilted cover

Comfort Layer

Brooklyn’s comfort layer comes from its patented TitanFlex foam. So, what exactly is TitanFlex and what makes it so special? TitanFlex is a latex alternative which provides the pressure relief of a gel foam with the responsiveness of latex. This means it provides the best of both worlds by evenly distributing pressure across the mattress with just the right amount of contouring and responsiveness. The result is exceptional pressure point relief that can help reduce joint and muscle pain. The cooling gel infused within the TitanFlex pulls heat away from the body, keeping you cool all night long. TitanFlex’s open cell structure and overall design enables it to have higher water absorption and greater moisture wicking. This engineering allows moisture to be released from the mattress more quickly, also contributing to a cooler, more comfortable sleep. Depending upon the comfort level, you’ll have 1″ or 1.5″ of Titanflex in the Signature.

Below the Titanflex is a layer of VariFlex transition foam. This second layer is 1″ thick and provides deep compression support and comfort. It is more of a support layer than a “comfort/contouring” layer and acts as a transition to the coil support system. Here’s the Signature’s comfort layer construction:

Soft: 1.5″ TitanFlex, 1″ Variflex
Medium: 1.5″ TitanFlex, 1″ Variflex
Firm: 1″ TitanFlex, 2″ VariFlex

Coil System

The Signature’s support system employs up to 961 individually encased 8” Ascension coils directly underneath the comfort layer. Brooklyn individually wraps each coil to mitigate any motion transfer within the mattress. This combination allows for exceptional reactivity and motion isolation, minimizing sleep disturbance. Additionally, Brooklyn reinforces the edge with higher caliber perimeter coils to create greater edge support along the sides, head and foot of the bed. The result? A solid support system that will last for years to come.

Bottom Support Layer

Underneath the Ascension coils, Brooklyn lays .25″ of highly responsive foam to add further compression support to the mattress and absorb any additional motion.

Tufting

Tufting is the process where the individual parts of the mattress are either sewn or glued together to prevent slippage. In the Signature’s case, they chose top tufting, where the cover is sewn into the gel foam layer. Tufting helps keep everything nice and together. This is just another example of the little details Brooklyn takes care of so you can rest easy.

Does Signature Sleep Cool?

YES! We found Signature to offer a neutral to cool temperature control. Being cool at night is all about being dry. Signature accomplishes the cool factor through a 3 step process:

  1. The cover wicks away moisture
  2. The gel infused TitanFlex comfort layer pulls heat from the body (and doesn’t return it!)
  3. As the mattress is a hybrid, air flows and circulates in-between the coil system

Final result – Signature will keep you cool and dry throughout the night allowing your body to get the rest it deserves.

How about Edge Support?
Good

Brooklyn reinforces the Signature support system with higher caliber Ascension springs around the perimeter of the mattress. The result offers good edge support and ensures a “sag free” experience. This edge support increases the sleeping area so, for example, if one partner is a bed hog, the other partner can rest soundly on the edge. Finally, when you get out of bed in the morning, the higher caliber springs as well as the responsive TitanFlex helps you get out!

Endurance Testing – Will Signature Stand the Test of Time?

Signature is one of the highest quality mattresses in this budget range. Brooklyn spends a tremendous amount of time stress testing the materials to get the most out of the springs and foam. The result? A long lasting bed that can support up to 950 lbs.

Signature's Three Distinct Comfort Styles (Soft, Medium and Firm)

No matter which style you choose, just by the traditional look of the Brooklyn Signature, you know you’ll be sleeping on a comfortable yet very supportive mattress for many years to come. As we’ve said before, in this budget range it is difficult to find a more supportive or comfortable mattress. Let’s take a closer look at the different styles.

Signature Soft

From the moment you lay down on the Signature Soft, the layers of TitanFlex immediately begin to give pressure relief. The gel top will envelop and contour to your body more than its firmer cousins such as the Medium. That said, after a few minutes, as you settle into the mattress, you can begin to feel the support from the Ascension pocketed coils. You will feel that support system very slightly underneath to help with alignment to give you enough resistance to push back to fill the spaces in-between your body and the mattress. You will feel a little more “in it” (as opposed to on top of it), but you won’t be losing the support.

With the soft, exclusive side sleepers get the best of both worlds as it offers the most pressure and spinal alignment due to the sinking of the hip and shoulder regions. Because the bed envelops you more, some think that might make the bed sleep warmer or even hotter. This is not the case with Brooklyn. The cooling gel combined with the air flow design and the cover keep this soft bed cool all evening long.

The sweet spot for weight is up to 200 (especially for side sleepers). Above that weight, you’ll start to lose the benefit of the pressure relief from the gel as your body rests more on the springs. At that size, you might consider the Medium model as the comfort layer provides additional support and comfort relief.

  • On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Soft a 5 out of 10.
  • Primarily designed for side sleepers. Side/stomach or side/back sleepers might feel more support on the Medium.
  • Even though you sink into the comfort layer, the superior airflow design and advanced cooling technology will keep you cool and dry all night long.
  • Edge support is good – minimal side sagging!
Signature Medium

The Signature Medium is a true multi-sleeper designed to support all sleeping styles – side, stomach, back and any combination therein. Immediately upon laying on the Medium you can feel the TitanFlex gel foam take you in but you quickly feel the substantial support cradling your body. Almost immediately you will feel the support of the coil system begin to push back and cradle your body no matter which position you sleep. You will feel just enough pressure relief on the top of the mattress but you are also going to have the support system that is going to keep you “on” the mattress rather than “in” the mattress as in the soft. No matter your sleeping style, you cannot go wrong with this mattress, especially at this value price. It has a little less pressure relief than the soft, a little more pressure relief than the firm, but with the same support to keep your body aligned correctly.

  • On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Medium a 6.5 out of 10.
  • This is a MultiSleeper, designed for all sleeping styles.
  • The Titanflex comfort layer provides a little bit of sink, but even so, the superior airflow design and advanced cooling technology will keep you cool and dry all night long.
  • Edge support is good – minimal side sagging!
Signature Firm

As the name denotes, this bed is firm, bordering on hard. It has a thinner top cushion layer and a deeper denser support foam. Back and side sleepers will get the most comfort from the Firm model. Side sleepers may get away with it but you lose the softer luxury feel in the softer versions. You will definitely not sink as you sleep “on top” of this mattress. The bed still packs in all of the same cooling features as it’s cousins so you will sleep cool and dry throughout the night. If you do end up on your side, you won’t have as much pressure relief. You will, however, have the same cooling factors and of course support.

  • On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Firm a 8.0 out of 10.
  • Stomach and back sleepers will get the most benefit out of the Firm version. Any side sleepers should look more toward the Medium or Soft.
  • The firm comfort layer provides very little sink, but even so, the superior airflow design and advanced cooling technology will keep you cool and dry all night long.
  • Edge support is good – minimal side sagging!

Motion Isolation

All Signature comfort levels have very good motion isolation. Simply put, you will rarely feel your partner move at night. Whether they are a toss and turner, an early riser or using the facilities, it’s not the bed that will wake you. However, there are slight differences among the styles due to their construction. Soft and medium will have the least amount of motion transfer because the plusher gel foam by its very nature does not transfer motion. It absorbs energy. Any motion might come from the springs below, but the pocket coil system separates the springs further isolating any motion transfer. The Firm has a higher density TitanFlex which is more responsive. However, to counter the additional motion possibility, Signature uses additional VeriFlex gel foam to provide the extra absorption, mitigating motion transfer as much as possible. If you need total motion isolation, then look more towards the all foam mattresses. However, the design and attention to detail get these hybrids very close to no motion.

How does the Signature Mattress Arrive?

All Brooklyn beds come in a box. It’s crazy to think that a king size model with powerful springs and dense foams can be compressed, but it can. And, with no sacrifice to quality and durability. Some people ask if compressing the springs will hurt their integrity. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Springs are actually shipped compressed all over the world (to save space). The springs integrity is damaged if pulled excessively or bent out of position. But, the way Brooklyn compresses its mattresses, they keep their shape and strength. The box arrives via Fedex or UPS from their Phoenix, AZ factory. Simply unbox the mattress. Rest it on the bed frame, remove the plastic wrapping and the bed will decompress before your eyes. You can begin sleeping on the bed and enjoying a restful night sleep that same day.

What’s the Return Policy? Can I exchange it for either a softer or firmer model?

Brooklyn offers a 120 night trial period. You can either return it for a 100% refund, or you can adjust the comfort level with a free mattress topper during the trial period. You may also exchange it for a different mattress and pay/refund any price difference. Here’s how the system works:

  1. The trial begins when you RECEIVE the mattress (the Fedex delivery day).
  2. You can sleep on it for 120 nights. As there can be a slight break-in period, Brooklyn asks that you not initiate a return during the first 30 days.
  3. If it’s not the mattress of your dreams, reach out Brooklyn at [email protected], via phone, email or chat (on their website), provide your name and order number and let them know if you wish to RETURN or EXCHANGE. Either way, there are no questions asked!
  4. Returns: In most cases, Brooklyn will request that you have the mattress donated. Many of the charity foundations that are available offer a local pickup service. In the event that you are having trouble getting this coordinated, please let Brooklyn know and they will offer additional assistance. Once donated, you will receive a full refund. If you are having trouble, reach out to Brooklyn and they will be happy to assist.
  5. Full 100% refunds (no fees!!) are issued within 3-4 business days of the pick-up.
  6. Exchanges: For an exchange, Brooklyn will send the new mattress to your home BEFORE the old one is removed so you’ll never be without a bed to sleep on.

Brooklyn doesn’t stop there! After the trial period ends, Brooklyn offers a 10 year manufacturer warranty.
