Company Overview

Avocado is everything Organic. Their mission is simple. Produce luxurious 100% organic mattresses for an affordable price. Their Mantra: Make Healthy Sleep Accessible and Affordable. Formed in 2015, they launched the Avocado Green mattress in 2016, this California and New Jersey based company set out to achieve a lofty goal. And they nailed it. Not only do they have all of the certifications to prove it, but they went one step further. Avocado owns and controls its entire supply chain. That’s right, the sheep farms that produce the wool, the cotton fields that produce the cotton, the rubber trees in India that produce the latex. They even own the entire California based manufacturing facility (CU863637) which is one of only 5 GOTS and GOLS organic certified production facilities in the US.

Avocado doesn’t stop at organic materials, they have a relentless focus on high quality craftsmanship. In 2018, Avocado merged with Brentwood Home – maker of the award winning Oceano mattress. Brentwood has been hand crafting luxury mattresses from Santa Monica California since 1987. Avocado continued with a winning formula as all mattresses are assembled by hand in this California factory.

Here we’ll be reviewing the Avocado Organic Plush Mattress (both regular and Pillowtop). Let’s get into what makes it the bed that Consumers Reports rated Best Mattress of 2018 – 2021.

Construction / Materials

The Cover

Avocado starts with a 100% certified ultra soft cotton cover. Cotton is one of the softest, most breathable and most comfortable fabrics available. It’s cool, wicks moisture and, better still, is more sustainable. No polyester is blended in here. You will also notice wool circular petals dotted evenly throughout the mattress top. That’s the hand tufting that Avocado uses to keep all the parts nice and snug together. Vegan Note: Avocado substitutes Wool for Cotton in all Vegan versions. For an added aesthetic pleasure, Avocado adds a rich green tape edge to where the side meets the top of the mattress. While not structurally significant, it adds a beautiful design accent.

NO glues are used during the assembly process, all cover materials are stitched together, by hand.

AND the Avocado comes with 4 extra durable handles. Latex can be heavy, and the handles assist greatly when either moving or rotating the mattress.

Comfort Layers

Avocado uses 100% FSC® certified (C156318) Dunlop latex in every mattress. Of the two types of latex (Dunlop and Talalay), Dunlop is more eco-conscious as it uses less processing. As an added benefit, Avocado’s latex is also Rainforest Alliance certified. All latex is manufactured in facilities owned by Avocado so they can maintain control over the entire process under the close watchful eye of the USDA’s National Organic Program. Dunlop latex is naturally antimicrobial, cooler than memory foam, requires no adhesives to seam it together, and is more durable than Talalay latex.

Latex is made from rubber trees. As a result, it is more responsive than memory foam (which absorbs energy). Laying on latex, you can feel the material pushing back against you creating a bit of a “bounce”. For greater cooling, Avocado perforates their latex, increasing air flow throughout the mattress.

Top Layer

Layer 1: 100% GOTS organic certified cotton, sourced from Canada (450g).
Layer 2: 100% GOTS organic certified wool (450g), sourced ethically from our own farms in the Himalayas, their wool is certified to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), which addresses the welfare of sheep and the land they graze on, and the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® non-toxic certification (19.HIN.68466, Hohenstein HTTI).
Layer 3: 2 inches of 100% natural Alpaca fiber ethically sourced from the Netherlands (1,000g).
Layer 4: Another layer of our own 100% GOTS organic certified wool from India (325g).
Layer 5: 100% GOTS organic cotton canvas, sourced from South Carolina (375g/12oz).

Layer 7: 100% organic certified, needle-punched wool from our own farms and chemical-free processing in India (250g).
Layer 8: Soft GOTS organic certified wool, natural silk, and natural mohair blend (700g), sourced from the Netherlands.
Layer 9: 2 inches of 100% GOLS organic certified soft, Dunlop natural latex (D65/14-19ILD), with eco-INSTIUT®, FSC® and Rainforest Alliance® certifications. Sourced from India and/or Guatemala, from our own farms and organic certified processing facilities. This latex layer is contour cut, in a patented design, featuring three zones of body contouring support.
Layer 10: Another soft GOTS organic certified wool, natural silk, and natural mohair blend layer (700g).

Bottom and Side

Layer 11: Another layer of 100% GOTS organic certified cotton canvas (375g).
Layer 12: 100% GOTS organic certified, needle-punched wool, sourced from our farms in India.
Layer 13: Breathable 100% GOTS organic cotton jersey (95g), to help hold the organic latex in place.

The Result: The most cradling and comfortable all organic sleep you can find.

Layer 14: A 2.4” micro-coil innerspring unit, with up to 1,722 individually pocketed springs, for durability without sagging or settling, and to minimize “roll-together” and isolate motion (pillow-top only).
Layer 15: Soft GOTS organic certified wool, blended with cotton and natural silk (500g, pillow-top only).
Layer 16: 2 inches of 100% GOLS organic certified, soft Dunlop natural latex (D65/14-19ILD), with eco-INSTIUT®, FSC®, and Rainforest Alliance® certifications. Sourced from India and/or Guatemala, from our own farms and organic certified processing facilities.
Layer 17: Soft GOTS organic certified wool, natural silk, and natural mohair blend (700g), sourced from the Netherlands.
Layer 18: 100% GOTS organic certified natural hemp pad (450g) for firm support.
Layer 19: 8-inch innerspring unit, with up to 1,414 individually pocketed coils, made in the United States from recycled steel in 3 wire gauges, that move independently, and are arranged in 5 strategic zones, with a reinforced steel perimeter for edge support.
Layer 20: A 1-inch layer of our soft, 100% GOLS organic certified latex (D65/14-19ILD).
Layer 21: 100% GOTS organic certified cotton canvas from South Carolina.

The latex offers 3 zones for proper spinal alignment and long lasting support through Avocado’s patent pending method. Their proprietary Convoluted Latex, reimagines a mattress’s foam core. They use lasers to cut the top of the foam into concave peaks, along the bottom of the top layer (they don’t point up). These zig-zagging waves of organic latex inhibit motion transfer and create three targeted zones that contour to your body’s harder bits and natural curves. In the middle, these waves are more compact (1 inch apart), while at the ends, the waves are longer (2 inches apart). This keeps your spine aligned and reduces pressure points in your shoulder and hips.

3153 springs in this mattress guarantee support for a lifetime. The 5 zoned springs provide additional support as the mattress cradles you and provides extra support where it counts. The result: a support system that properly aligns the spine while relieving pressure points for a comfortable night’s rest.

Tufting

To ensure that everything fit together snug and tight on the mattress, Avocado decided on a 300 year old tried and true method – Needle Tufting. Needle tufting is the process of taking a long needle (as thick as the mattress) all the way through the layers to the base and back up. They tie each tufting with a flower pattern. This type of stitching can only be done by hand through the experts at Avocado’s manufacturing facility. The result, no clumping or shifting of materials creating a sold feeling mattress for a deep sleep all night long.

Does it Sleep Cool?

Yes! Avocado has several mechanisms to give you a cool and dry comfortable night sleep (even for us furnace sleepers). The first step to a cool night sleep starts with a dry night sleep. Let’s see how Avocado makes this happen. The first is the plush cotton fabric that makes the cover. It is breathable and naturally wicks away moisture. The layers upon layers of wool (sheep and alpaca), cotton and silk provide breathable layers of the most wicking natural materials on earth. Not to mention they are all antimicrobial keeping the mattress smelling fresh. Airflow reigns supreme throughout the Plush. Finally, the latex is perforated and channeled allowing for even greater air to flow whether you are moving or staying still at night. The result, a luxuriously cool dry REM inducing sleep all night long.

Comfort / Feel

How does the mattress feel when you lay down on it? In a word: Luxury. Designed as a multi-sleeper, the plush mattress will accommodate side, back and stomach sleepers. Although exclusive side sleepers may enjoy the pillow version just a bit more. The top layers of wool, silk and cotton will bring you gently for a soft landing on the mattress. MInimal motion transfer due to the thick comfort layer. As the fibers bring you in, you start to feel the support from the 8 inch 5 zoned spring system that makes up the primary support base. And, from the organic latex that Avocado is famous for. You will definitely sink in this bed but the responsive latex prevents too much sink. We like to say you will sleep a little “in” this bed as opposed to on top. The bed still packs in all of the same cooling features that organic cotton, wool, alpaca, silk and latex can provide, and sleeping on top means additional material will not be surrounding you, trapping in heat. Welcome to the most luxurious sleep you can find.

This is a plush multi sleeper designed to give equal benefit to side, stomach and back sleepers.
The plush comfort layers provide a good amount of sink but the mattress will not envelop you as an ultra soft memory foam mattress may. But even so, the superior airflow design and advanced cooling technology will keep you cool and dry all night long.

Avocado Organic Luxury Plush Pillowtop Mattress

How does the mattress feel when you lay down on it? In a word: Luxury. Seven inches of layered comfort create a substantial amount of give, without the feeling of sinking into quicksand. The fibers will cradle your body and relieve your pressure points and begin to put your body into a deep comfortable sleep. The key to a comfortable sleep is proper spinal alignment, and that’s where the double support system made from 3,136 spring coils and 5 zoned support kicks in. The 2.5 inch coils help cradle to your pressure points and the 8 inch coils come in to align the spine. Throw in the additional layers of latex and this plush mattress will give you one of the most luxurious and comfortable sleeps imaginable. The pillowtop is really designed for side sleepers as the gentle cradle will give loads of shoulder and hip comfort. But no matter what, you will feel like you’re sleeping on a 100% organic cloud.

Side sleepers get the most benefit out of the Organic Plush mattress. Exclusive stomach and back sleepers should look to the non-pillow top for additional support.

Motion Isolation (no motion transfer)

Excellent

NO partner disturbance here! The layers upon layers of organic material will serve to dampen any movement that a partner may have during the evening, or when getting into/out of bed. Latex, known for its quick response, is a different type of a material than the traditional memory foams that absorb energy. Latex provides more “bounce” which is excellent for some bedtime activities but takes a little away from motion isolation. However, this will be dampened by the additional layers of cotton, wool, alpaca, and silk that make up the comfort layer of this amazing mattress.

How about Edge Support?

Excellent

The layers of organic material will serve to stabilize the mattress, both preventing motion transfer and supporting the mattress all the way to the edge. You may feel a little give at the edge, however it is quickly overcome by the dunlop latex responsive layer. And, further reinforced by the extra supportive perimeter springs that come standard in all Avocado hybrid mattresses. One Added Benefit: as Latex is ultra responsive, the mattress helps you get out of bed in the morning!

Off Gassing

How does it arrive?

The Avocado Luxury Plush Mattress does not come compressed in a box. Could they? Yes, but instead Avocado chose to have White Glove Delivery and Mattress Removal. It ships flat via freight carrier and there is a charge that is calculated at checkout, however, old mattress is included. The mattress ships to a local distribution center where you will receive a call to arrange a delivery at the time of your choosing. Avocado will be with you all the way through the process. So, rest assured, your mattress will come with all the love and care that you deserve.

What’s the Avocado Return Policy / Warranty?

Avocado stands behind their bed so much that they give you a FULL YEAR, yes 365 Days! to try it out. Most companies offer 100 nights. If for any reason this is not the mattress of your dreams, you can return it for a 100% refund. Here’s how it works:

The trial begins when you RECEIVE the mattress (the Fedex delivery day).
