Company Overview
Formed in 2015, Helix is all about personal preference and individuality. Each mattress is designed for your unique body type, sleeping position, and feel preference using Helix’s proprietary sleep technology. That mantra, combined with advanced R&D and a focus on technology to drive sleep, allowed it to win countless independently reviewed awards.
Headquartered in New York City, Helix offers free shipping directly to your doorstep in the US and Canada with a 100-night no questions asked trial.
In 2019, Helix introduced its first all natural and sustainable brand Birch. The brand carries 100% organic certified products.
Before we dive into the six comfort levels, let’s have a look at the reason the Helix is ranked as one of the most comfortable and supportive hybrid mattresses on the market.
Helix Construction & Materials
The Cover
Helix chose a breathable stretch knit cover for the original hybrid mattress line. It’s a silky performance fabric designed for breathability to keep you cool No more tossing and turning because you are hot.
Cooling Gel Cover (Optional) – As an upgrade, you may choose to add the GlacioTex+ cool-to-the-touch phase change material (PCM) cover. PCM is comprised of heat activated gel microbeads. Generally, our skin is 91 degrees, however our ideal sleeping skin temperature is 88 degrees. When the PCM gel beads come into contact with a temperature greater than 88 degrees they liquify and activate. Gel absorbs heat, so you get that cool-to-the touch feeling. When the temperature reaches 88 degrees, the beads solidify and lessen the heat draw. This helps the Helix mattress cover regulate your skin temperature at the optimal level – making it very popular with hot sleepers.
Comfort Layer + Additional Support Foam
Helix differentiates each model at the comfort layer. By layering a gel infused pressure relieving comfort foam on top of a conforming support core foam, Helix can tailor each mattress to fit your unique sleeping style. Why a gel infused top layer? Gel pulls away heat from your body. It keeps you cool throughout the night so you achieve the maximum benefits of sleep. Below the gel is a supportive foam layer that offers springiness and bounciness along with weight distribution. The support core prevents that total energy absorption / super-sinking feeling of most memory foams.
Depending upon your unique style, Helix uses a dual combination in every comfort layer of:
- Memory Plus: High density Memory Plus Foam for best in class comfort and pressure relief, Soft Feel, High Density for durability.
- Helix Dynamic: Designed to react and contour to your body for full body comfort. Lower IFD. Their proprietary adaptable foam for contouring and cushioned support.
- High Grade Polyfoam: transition providing ergonomic support and contour, designed to dampen motion transfer and allow further support (soft, medium, firm)
The comfort level combinations are as follows::
- Sunset*Most Popular Plush* (Side & Multi Sleeper – Soft)
- Comfort: Memory Plus Soft (cool, soft feel, high density for durability)
- Support: Helix Dynamic Soft (full body comfort, soft feel)
- Moonlight (Stomach & Back Sleeper – Soft)
- Comfort: Helix Dynamic Soft (built to cushion and cradle, cool, soft feel)
- Support: Helix Dynamic Soft (full body comfort, soft feel)
- Midnight*Most Popular Overall* (Side / Multi Sleeper – Medium)
- Comfort: Memory Plus Medium (cool, medium feel, high density for durability)
- Support: High-Grade Polyfoam (medium)
- Dusk (Stomach & Back Sleeper – Medium)
- Comfort: Helix Dynamic Medium (built to cushion and cradle, cool medium feel)
- Support: Memory Plus Medium (high density for best in class support)
- Twilight (Side / Multi Sleeper – Firm)
- Comfort: Memory Plus Firm (high density for best in class support)
- Support: High-Grade Polyfoam (firm)
- Dawn*Most Popular Firm* (Stomach & Back Sleeper – Firm)
- Comfort: Helix Dynamic Firm (full body support, firm feel)
- Support: High-Grade Polyfoam (firm)
Coil Support System
Helix’s support system employs individually encased 8” coils directly underneath the support layer. These coils are individually wrapped to mitigate any motion transfer within the mattress. This combination allows for exceptional reactivity and motion isolation, minimizing sleep disturbance. Additionally, Brooklyn Bedding reinforces the side edges of the mattress higher caliber coils to create greater edge support along the sides. The result? A solid support system that will last for years to come.
Bottom Support Layer
The bottom DuraDense foam layer of the mattress provides base support and durability to the entire mattress. This final stage helps keep everything together and limits motion for the sleeper.
Tufting
Tufting is the process where the individual parts of the mattress are either sewn or glued together to prevent slippage. In Helix’s case, they chose a shallow top tufting, where the cover is sewn into the gel foam layer. Tufting helps keep everything nice and together. This is just another example of the little details Helix takes care of so you can rest easy.
Does Helix Sleep Cool?
We found all Helix models offer a cool to neutral temperature control. Being cool at night is all about being dry. Helix accomplishes this cool factor through a 3 step process to disperse heat.
- The breathable knit cover wicks away moisture
- The gel infused comfort layer pulls heat from the body (and doesn’t return it!)
- As the mattress is a hybrid, air is able to flow and circulate in-between the coil system
Final result – Helix will keep you cool and dry throughout the night allowing your body to get the rest it deserves.
How about Edge Support?
Good: Helix surrounds side edges of the mattress with stronger springs to make sure the mattress edge is as “sag free” as possible. This edge support increases the sleeping area so, for example, if one partner is a bed hog, the other partner can rest soundly on the edge. Finally, when you get out of bed in the morning, it gives you that little nudge to help you get out!
Six Distinct Helix Comfort Styles
Helix Sunset *Most Popular Plush* (Soft, Side / Multi Position Sleepers)
The Sunset is Helix’s softest model and a top choice for lighter-to-average sized sleepers looking for a plush feel. The softer top layer of gel gives you a soft, lavish plush comfort – like sinking into a cloud. The luxury gel foam immediately relieves the pressure points on your hips and shoulders.
From the moment you lay down on the Sunset, it is obvious that you’ve arrived on the soft plush version. The gel top will envelop and contour to your body more than its firmer cousins such as the Midnight. That said, after a few minutes, as you settle into the mattress, you can begin to ever so slightly feel the pushback from the pocketed coils as they begin to properly align your spine. You will definitely feel more “in-the-mattress” (as opposed to on top of it), but you won’t be sacrificing the support.
With the Sunset, exclusive side sleepers get the best of both worlds: pressure relief and proper spinal alignment due to the sinking of the hip and shoulder regions. Because the bed envelops you more, some think the bed will sleep warm or even hot. This is not the case with Helix. The cooling gel combined with the air flow design and the knit cover keep this plush bed cool all evening long.
The sweet spot for weight is up to 180 lbs. Above that weight, you’ll start to lose the benefit of the pressure relief from the gel as your body rests more on the springs. At that size, you might consider the Moonlight or Midnight model as the comfort layer provides additional support and comfort relief.
- On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Sunset a 4 out of 10.
- Primarily designed for side sleepers. Side/stomach or side/back sleepers might feel more support on the Midnight Luxe.
- Even though you sink into the comfort layer, the superior airflow design and advanced cooling technology will keep you cool and dry.
- Edge support is good- minimal side sagging here.
Helix Moonlight (Soft, Stomach / Back Position Sleepers)
The Moonlight has a soft, plush feel but with a touch more support than its sister, the Sunset. Best for back or stomach sleepers and couples with different preferences, Moonlight features Helix Dynamic Foam creating support and even lift. Softer top layers give you that plush comfort you love – like sinking into a cloud.
The gel top will envelop and contour to your body more than its firmer cousins such as the Midnight. The Moonlight may feel plush, however, but it does not sacrifice support. You will feel that support system very slightly underneath to help with alignment to give you enough resistance to push back to fill the space in-between your body and the mattress. You will still feel more “in it” (as opposed to on top of it), but you won’t be losing the support.
Because the Moonlight envelops you more, some think it may sleep warm or even hot. This is not the case with Moonlight. The cooling gel combined with the air flow design keep this plush bed cool all evening long.
The sweet spot for weight is up to 180. Above that weight, you’ll start to lose the benefit of the pressure relief from the gel as your body rests more on the springs. At that size, you might consider the Moonlight Luxe as it provides greater support and comfort relief.
- On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Moonlight a 5 out of 10.
- Moonlight is primarily designed for back and stomach sleepers (multi-sleeper if on the smaller side) that still want a soft, plush mattress. Side/stomach or side/back sleepers seeking more support might feel more support on the Midnight or Moonlight Luxe.
- Even though you sink into the comfort layer, the airflow design and cooling technology will keep you cool and dry all night long.
- Edge support is good – reinforced sides help keep sagging to a minimum.
Helix Midnight *Most Popular Overall* (Medium, Side / Multi Position Sleepers)
The most popular model, the Helix Midnight a multi-sleeper that supports all sleep styles. This not-too-firm, not-too-soft is good for couples with different feel preferences. It features memory foam for pressure point relief on your hips and shoulders.
Immediately upon laying on the Midnight, you can feel the gel comfort layer take you in but you quickly feel the support foam cradling your body. Almost immediately you will feel the support of the coil system begin to push back and cradle your body no matter which position you sleep. There is just enough pressure relief on the top of the mattress but you are also going to have the support system that is going to keep you “on” the mattress rather than “in” the mattress as in the Sunset.
Sweet spot for weight is 190 lbs. Above that weight, check out the Midnight Luxe for additional comfort and support.
- On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Midnight a 6.5 out of 10.
- This is a MultiSleeper, designed for all sleeping styles.
- The comfort layer provides a little bit of sink, but even so, the airflow design and cooling technology will keep you cool all night long.
- Edge support is good, for greater edge support check out the Midnight Luxe.
Helix Dusk (Medium, Stomach / Back Position Sleepers)
Closely related to Midnight, the Helix Dusk is another popular model. It come with a little more support in the comfort layer making it a multi-sleeper but for those that prefer back and stomach more often.
As with the Midnight, upon laying on the Dusk, you can feel the gel take you in but you quickly feel the support foams cradle your body. Almost immediately you will feel the support of the coil system begin to push back. Dusk is primarily designed to support stomach/back sleepers. There is just enough pressure relief but you will still sleep more “on top” of the mattress. rather than “in” the mattress as in the Sunset.
Sweet spot for weight is 190 lbs. Above that weight, check out the Dusk Luxe for additional comfort and support.
- On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Dusk a 7 out of 10.
- This is designed for stomach/back sleeping styles.
- The comfort layer provides a little bit of sink, but even so, the airflow design and cooling technology will keep you cool and dry all night long.
- Edge support is good, for greater edge support check out the Dusk Luxe.
Helix Twilight (Firm, Side / Multi Position Sleepers)
The Helix Twilight ventures into the firmer side of sleep. While still a multi-sleeper supporting all positions, the denser comfort layer definitely gives you the “sleeping on top” feel when lying on the mattress. Smaller back and stomach sleepers that prefer a firmer feel will enjoy the Twilight. Very little sink or give in this mattress, it will feel firm underneath. You will definitely not sink as much as you sleep “on top” of this mattress. The bed still comes with the same cooling features as it’s cousins so you will sleep cool and dry throughout the night.
Sweet spot for weight is 190 lbs. Above that weight, check out the Twilight Luxe for additional comfort and support.
- On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Twilight an 8.0 out of 10.
- Stomach and back sleepers will get the most benefit out of the Twilight version. Larger side sleepers may also enjoy the Twilight.
- The firm comfort layer provides very little sink, but even so, the airflow design and cooling technology will keep you cool and dry all night long.
- Edge support is good, for greater edge support check out the Twilight Luxe.
Helix Dawn *Most Popular Firm* (Firm, Stomach / Back Position Sleepers)
The Helix Dawn is the firmest model in the family. Some may even say hard, but it still has a touch of comfort. Designed for back and stomach sleepers up to 200 lbs, of all sizes the Dynamic Foam creates a support and even loft.
The Dawn is designed to support those of us that are larger sleepers, however the lighter exclusive back and stomach sleepers have also found it to be comfortable. The bed is more responsive. When you push on it, it pushes back. This definitely makes it easier to get in and out of bed. The Dawn is not designed as a multi sleeper for average weight individuals, however it can support all sleeping styles of larger sleepers. Average weight folks can easily sleep on their stomach or back, but the side will not provide enough pressure relief. They will want to look toward the Dawn Luxe.
- On Sandman’s Firmness Scale, we rate Dawn an 8.5 out of 10.
- The Dawn was designed to support larger sleepers of any sleeping style. Lighter sleepers will find most comfort on either their stomach or back.
- The comfort layer provides very little sink, but even so, the airflow design and cooling technology will keep you cool and dry all night long.
- As with other Helix regular mattresses, edge support is good, but, for greater edge support check out the Dawn Luxe.
Motion Isolation (no motion transfer)
Good
All Helix mattresses provide good motion isolation. Simply put, you may feel your partner move at night. However, there are differences among the styles due to their construction (if we’re splitting hairs). Sunset and Moonlight will have the least amount of motion transfer because the plush nature of their gel foam will absorb motion more than the denser foam comfort layers than their cousins. Any motion that may exist, will most likely come from the springs below, but the pocket coil system separates the springs further isolating any motion transfer. For greater motion isolation check out the Helix Luxe line.
How does the Helix arrive?
Every Helix comes in a box. It’s crazy to think that a king size model with powerful springs and dense foams can be compressed, but it can. And, without sacrificing quality and durability. Some people ask if compressing the springs hurts their integrity. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Springs are actually shipped compressed all over the world (to save space). Pulling or bending springs damages their integrity. But, the way Helix compresses its mattresses, springs keep their shape and strength.
The box arrives via FedEx. Simply unbox the mattress. Rest it on the bed frame, remove the plastic wrapping and the bed will decompress before your eyes. You can begin sleeping on the it and enjoying a restful night sleep that same day.
What is Helix's Return Policy? Can I Exchange a Helix for a Softer or Firmer Model?
Helix offers a 100 night trial period, giving you over 3 months to test out your new investment. You can either return it for a 100% refund during the trial period. It truly is hassle free as Helix does all the heavy lifting. Here’s how both systems work:
- The trial begins when you RECEIVE the mattress (the Fedex delivery day).
- You can sleep on it for 100 nights. As there can be a slight break-in period, Helix asks that you not initiate a return during the first 30 days.
- If it’s not the mattress of your dreams, reach out to Helix via phone, email or chat (on their website), provide your name and order number and let them know if you wish to start a RETURN. There are no questions asked!
- Helix coordinates a donation or recycling pickup on a day of your choosing. They handle everything and there’s nothing you have to do besides letting them know the best pickup date.
- Full 100% refunds (no fees!!) are issued within 5 days of the pick-up.
What if the bed is just too firm or too soft. Can I exchange?
Helix offers a very popular program if you love the bed, but it’s just not quite right. They will send you a FREE TOPPER ($150 value), no questions asked. It just needs to be within the trial period. The great thing about the Helix topper is that it acts like a fitted sheet. No slip or sliding here, the topper becomes part of you bed.
Finally, Helix backs every mattress with a 10 year warranty!
